Omega-3 for heart health, inflammation and more

Omega-3 fatty acids are real all-rounders when it comes to improving heart health. Not only do they have a proven effect on blood lipid values, but they also strongly influence blood pressure. It has been scientifically proven that the omega-3 fatty acids EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) play a role in reducing high blood pressure. This is an important finding, as high blood pressure is a significant risk factor for the development of cardiovascular diseases.

The Swiss Heart Association and the Swiss Society for Nutrition (SGE) recommend a balanced diet rich in omega-3 fatty acids to improve heart health and control high blood pressure. These recommendations include regularly eating oily fish such as salmon and mackerel, as well as using premium omega-3 dietary supplements if dietary intake alone is insufficient.

To effectively reduce blood pressure, it is not only important to consume an adequate amount of omega-3 fatty acids, but also to pay attention to overall dietary habits. A low-salt, high-potassium diet can increase the blood pressure-reducing effect of omega-3 fatty acids. Foods such as vegetables, legumes and bananas are excellent sources of potassium and should be included in every diet, as recommended by the SGE.

Omega-3 fatty acids also demonstrate anti-inflammatory characteristics that are important for our overall health. Inflammation in the body is the source of many chronic diseases, including rheumatoid arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease, asthma, psoriasis and eczema.

The Swiss Society for Nutrition stresses that an anti-inflammatory diet rich in omega-3 fatty acids can reduce the risk of these inflammatory diseases. This underlines the importance of a balanced diet with adequate omega-3 consumption.

Scientific studies have shown that high doses of EPA and DHA, generally several grams per day, can be helpful in treating these inflammatory diseases. Significant improvements have been observed for rheumatoid arthritis symptoms in particular. A 2012 study by Miles EA and Calder PC confirms these findings, emphasising the positive effect of omega-3 fatty acids on the immune system.

Omega-3 fatty acids for mental health and vision

The positive effect of omega-3 fatty acids is not limited to physical health. Research findings suggest that omega-3 fatty acids can also influence our mental health. The Swiss Society for Nutrition recommends including omega-3 fatty acids in our diet due to the role they can play in reducing depression and stabilising our mood.

Omega-3 fatty acids also play a crucial role in maintaining good eyesight. DHA, in particular, is an important component of the retina. Omega-3 fatty acids help to support eye health and reduce the risk of eye diseases as we age.

However, it should be noted that dietary supplements with omega-3 fatty acids are not always the best option. A balanced diet rich in fish, nuts, seeds and green leafy vegetables, can be a natural and effective option to ensure adequate omega-3 fatty acid intake. If you are concerned or suffer from severe illnesses, you should discuss the use of dietary supplements with your doctor or nutritional consultant to determine the proper amount and course of action. The positive effect of omega-3 fatty acids for our health is certainly impressive, and shows us the importance of a balanced diet for our cardiovascular health.
